Senate backs deer hunting over bait in S. Georgia

March 31, 2011

The state Senate voted 34-17 to allow hunters in South Georgia to put out bait to attract deer.

House Bill 277 had been debated in both chambers, and an amendment in the Senate means the bill has to go back to the House for a new vote.

Opponents of the bill were concerned about the ethics of fair chase, while its supporters said deer were overpopulated in areas and that hunting near planted food plots is already legal.
