A bicyclist was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a school bus in Covington, authorities said.

The accident happened about 7:20 a.m. on Highway 12 at Alcovy Road, the Georgia State Patrol said in a statement. There were no children on the school bus when the accident happened.

The bicyclist, a 45-year-old man, traveled into the path of the bus in a crosswalk at an intersection, the GSP said. He was taken to Piedmont Hospital in Covington, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the GSP, the bus was traveling east on Highway 12 at Alcovy Road. The driver stopped and was waiting for westbound traffic to clear to make a left turn onto Alcovy Road.

The bus had a green light, and began to turn left when the traffic cleared. The bus struck the bicycle on the left side and ejected the bicyclist, according to the GSP.

The bicyclist’s name was not released. The investigation is ongoing, according to the GSP.
