Decatur’s school board postponed an official agreement with the city on annexation Tuesday night.

“We want additional dialogue and certain assurances from the city,” Superintendent Phyllis Edwards said.

The board generally agrees annexation is the correct long-term solution for both city and schools. But it wants a short-term plan that includes identifying land for building one or two schools and assistance—likely through a G.O. Bond on the ballot next year — in paying for construction and the salaries of additional faculty and staff.

The board asked for a joint session with city commissioners sometime before Dec. 18.

Decatur is scheduled to vote on its annexation master plan Monday, although that may now be delayed.
