A Sandy Springs toddler shot himself in the hand after finding a gun, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The incident happened when the parents and child were at their home on Village Creek Trace off Peachtree Dunwoody Road on Monday afternoon.

“The father was fixing a toy and his girlfriend was on a laptop,” Sandy Springs police Capt. Steve Rose told Channel 2. “They were in bed, they hear a sound and go into another room where the child had shot himself with a .380 pistol.”

The child had found the gun under a bed and shot himself in the thumb. The gun was not properly secured, according to Rose.

The child’s father rushed him to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, where a social worker told police of the incident.

Police cited Shaunell Robinson, the child’s mother, with reckless conduct for not properly securing the gun.

Robinson told Channel 2 that the boy is recovering and will be taken to a hand specialist to be checked out.
