The Georgia Secretary of State’s office has opened an investigation into Tuesday’s special election to fill the District 3 Sandy Springs City Council seat.

A complaint form provided by the office indicated the case centered upon lack of notification of change in polling place and on precinct locations. Concerns had been expressed that only one polling place had been set up-at the Hammond Park program building- to serve seven precincts. City spokeswoman Sharon Kraun said that the city will provide all requested information. She said the city’s position has been that only one location was set up so as to avoid co-mingling the special election with the general primary vote, as specified by state law.

The election was set after former councilman Graham McDonald resigned to run for a Georgia House seat.

Secretary of State’s office spokeswoman Candice Broce said that once the probe is finished, an investigator will present findings to the state elections board. The board could take one of several actions, including referring the case to the attorney general’s office for possible prosecution.
