Community leaders Betty and Phil Klein have been honored with the city of Sandy Springs Humanitarian Award, presented Monday during its annual Martin Luther King Day observance.

The Kleins were lauded on both personal and professional levels. Betty Klein created Atlanta-based non-profit Childkind to support families in need and serves on the board of North Springs Charter High School and as a parent volunteer. The Kleins also have worked with women and children infected with HIV and have fostered and adopted numerous children.

It’s the first time a couple has received the award, which was created as a tribute to Dr. King and his advocacy of community service.
