A safety upgrade project on Riverside Drive at I-285 in Sandy Springs will start Monday, weather permitting.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will replace the current traffic signalization at the entrance and exit ramps and lack of turn lanes across the interstate with single lane roundabouts. The project is aimed at reducing traffic blockages.

GDOT officials said there have been more than 70 crashes there from 2008 to 2012.

The $5.6 million interchange redesign is scheduled for completion in November and will require lane closures from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weeknights and from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. on weekends.
