Sandy Springs is considering buying another home on Hammond Drive. This time, a 1959 home will cost the city $410,000. It will be voted on at Tuesday's city council meeting.

City leaders in Sandy Springs are considering a buying a home and property along Hammond Drive for a road widening project.

The item will be discussed at Tuesday night’s city council meeting, and a recommendation from city staff to buy the property will be presented by City Attorney Dan Lee.

If Mayor Rusty Paul and the City Council approve of the purchase, Sandy Springs will spend $410,000 to purchase the home and the property it sits on at 650 Hammond Drive.

City staff has been in negotiations with the property owners to buy the home, which was built in 1959 and sits on about a third-of-an-acre lot between Lorell Terrace and Glenridge Drive.

Lee's proposal to the City Council says that if the city fails to acquire this property it would mean the city has to modify the proposed road widening project on Hammond Drive. It would also increase the cost of the project, Lee says.

This would be the second home along Hammond Drive that the city has purchased this year. At a May 15 meeting, city council voted to buy a home at 436 Hammond Drive for $425,000.

In September and October, the city paid a combined $800,000 for two homes on Kayron Drive that were in the way of the project.

If the houses the city purchases along Hammond Drive cost less to repair than it would to tear them down, then the city will keep the homes up and rent them to public safety personnel – like firefighters and police officers – at affordable rates.
