Unattended cooking is being blamed for an early morning fire at a Sandy Springs apartment complex that left eight families homeless.

The Sandy Springs Fire Department was called to the Versailles Apartments on Roswell Road just after 6 a.m. Sunday, said Battalion Chief Daryl Smith. Firefighters were able to put out the blaze that left four units with fire and smoke damage. Power had to be cut to two buildings in the complex, impacting 10 families. Red Cross representatives were at the complex assisting the eight families displaced by the fire, Smith said.

A 21-year-old man, who was in the apartment where the fire started, was taken to Northside Hospital for possible smoke inhalation. By mid-afternoon the impacted units in the complex had been boarded up, Smith said, and the property had been turned over to management for further repairs.
