Sandy Springs is moving to implement its transportation improvement program, now that Fulton County voters have approved a Transportation Special Purpose Local Optional Sales Tax.

Starting next April, a 0.75 percent sales tax will be collected in Fulton outside the city of Atlanta that’s expected to raise $103.7 million over five years for Sandy Springs transportation projects. The City Council on Tuesday heard a staff proposal for action.

“In preparation for the referendum, we conducted significant preliminary groundwork,” said Sandy Springs City Manager John McDonough. “Following the vote of approval on Election Day, we were able to immediately begin structuring implementation plans to move our project list forward.”

“Tier One” projects for Sandy Springs include intersection improvements at Johnson Ferry Road and Mount Vernon Highway; design and right-of-way acquisitions for an upgraded Hammond Drive; a multi-use path connecting the City Springs downtown redevelopment to the Sandy Springs MARTA station; and Perimeter Transit Last Mile Connectivity, a network of trails and right-of-way acquisitions for possible, future, high-capacity transit for the Perimeter Community Improvement District.
