Sandy Springs plans to spend $160,000 – the local match for a $640,000 grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation – on preliminary engineering of an extension of the Path400 trail from Atlanta’s Buckhead to the Perimeter area.
The City Council recently approved a “Project Framework Agreement” with GDOT for the design and construction of the extension. It would run 2.1 miles, from a link-up with the Path400 trail at Loridans Drive north to the Interstate 285 interchange, in the GDOT-owned right-of-way of Ga. 400.
Earlier this year, Sandy Springs greenlighted an agreement with Livable Buckhead and the PATH Foundation, creators of the Path400 trail, to start designing the extension. The Atlanta portion of Path400 will run 5.2 miles from south Buckhead to Loridans.
The Project Framework Agreement has Sandy Springs paying the extension’s construction costs, up to about $3.1 million. It is a “Tier 2” undertaking on the city’s list of projects to be funded by the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Fulton County outside Atlanta, approved by voters Nov. 8.
