Families walking to Decatur’s Westchester Elementary School now have a safer way to get across Scott Boulevard.

The Georgia Department of Transportation last week installed a new “pedestrian safety beacon” outside the school. The device allows pedestrians to push a button to activate overhead lights that stop traffic. Drivers must stop when the signal shows a double red light.

“Safety is the top priority for Georgia DOT, and pedestrians are among of our most vulnerable road users,” District Engineer Kathy Zahul said in a statement.

The city of Decatur applied for and received a $79,000 grant from GDOT for the device.

Westchester is located on busy Scott Boulevard near the intersection with Clairemont Road.
