The Fulton County medical examiner's office will wait for toxicology reports before ruling why a man died in the custody of East Point police.

An autopsy was performed Saturday on Rodney M. Winfrey, 33. Officers handcuffed him late Friday night after they saw him darting in and out of traffic, police said.

Winfrey did not heed officers' calls to get out of the street, forcing them to restrain him because he was endangering himself and passing motorists, police said.

"He was bloody from head to toe," East Point Det. Cliff Chandler said. "We're trying to determine how many people may have struck him."

At 10:50 p.m., police received reports that a man was running in and out of traffic at Ga. 166 and Stanton Road. When they arrived, Winfrey had moved to the intersection of Stanton Road and Allison Court.

Winfrey was handcuffed, and paramedics were called. Police said Winfrey became unresponsive while being treated at the scene. He was pronounced dead at 12:07 a.m. at South Fulton Medical Center.

A relative of Winfrey's told WSB-TV that the family doesn't feel it's getting the entire story about what happened.

Per department policy, the four East Point officers who responded have been placed on paid administrative leave. The GBI is investigating, along with the Fulton County DA's office.

Mark Guilbeau, senior investigator with the medical examiner's office, said it could take eight weeks or more to get toxicology reports and determine the cause of death.

Chandler said one unidentified woman whose car might have struck Winfrey was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Police plan to search her vehicle for evidence.

"Additional charges may be filed and the investigation is continuing," Chandler said.
