So far, so good for Helen, where residents welcomed the snow but feared a deep freeze.
DOT snow plows made their first sweep through the tourist friendly mountain town around 9 a.m. Helen had received roughly 4 inches of snow overnight, and the flakes continue to fall.
Few cars braved the elements, and with good reason. State Route 75 from Helen to Cleveland was covered by about 2 inches of compacted snow and DOT plows, seen all over on Tuesday, have been deployed elsewhere.
No power outages have been reported, and with more snow expected than freezing rain, Helen seems likely to avoid the widespread disruptions anticipated in metro Atlanta. More on power outages.
Up to 9 inches of accumulation is forecast for the north Georgia mountains on Wednesday.
The snow temporarily interrupted Julie Rodriguez’s trek up the Appalachian Trail. Rodriguez, who drove her bike from Connecticut to Texas for her daughter’s graduation before setting out on the trail last week, said it was too slick to navigate on Tuesday.
She said she was hopeful of resuming the hike on Wednesday.
“I love the snow,” said Rodriguez, 46. “I’ll take winter camping over the summer any day.”
