Roswell Police Chief Rusty Grant has announced his retirement, effective Dec. 30.
Grant was appointed chief in March 2013, five months after coming to Roswell as deputy chief. Before that, he served 32 years with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and was a special agent in charge of the Canton Regional Drug Enforcement Office.
Police Captain Helen Dunkin is being appointed interim deputy chief of police so that when Grant retires, she can become interim chief while Roswell seeks a new chief, officials said.
Grant’s retirement follows two embarrassing incidents earlier this year. Two officers were fired in July after video surfaced of them using a coin-flip app to determine if a motorist should be arrested. In November, police confirmed a sergeant was demoted after he was seen on body camera video leaving an uncooperative 13-year-old in a cold patrol car and taunting him.
The City Council has hired the Center for Public Safety Management LLC to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the department.
“The Roswell Police Department consists of the best men and women, sworn and civilian, in the business,” Grant said in a prepared statement. “It has been my pleasure to work with each of you over the last six years.”
