Taking steps to safeguard first responders, a Roswell City Council committee has recommended the purchase of “active shooter” protective gear for firefighters, and that the city accept federal funds to buy bulletproof vests for the police.

The Public Safety and Public Works Committee recommended the $48,258 purchase of 31 active shooter kits for use by Roswell Fire Department personnel. Each kit, to be supplied by North American Rescue, has a ballistic helmet, plate carrier (vest), Level III armor and an integrated medical kit.

Separately, the committee recommended that the city accept a $7,220 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, to partially fund the purchase of ballistic vests for police. The city will have to match the grant with up to $7,220 of its own money from the Police Department budget.

Both items are to be heard by the full Council in November.
