Roswell City Council members this week approved an approximately $124.6 million budget for FY 2017, a 4.6 percent increase from 2016’s $119.1 million.

Council members made several changes before signing off on the document. They rejected a plan to cut $100,000 in funding for Roswell Inc. and use most of that money to add a position to the city’s community development department to work on landing more new businesses.

They also voted against the idea of earmarking $50,000 for education, out of concern that the money was not targeted to specific projects. And they allocated more than $82,000 in additional dollars for sidewalks. The budget also includes several new positions and money for average 4 percent merit raises for city employees.

Council members also OK’d a millage rate of 5.455, the same rate the city has had since 2009.
