The Roswell City Council has accepted a $76,150 AmeriCorps Grant from the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism to help pay for after-school tutoring for Roswell youngsters.

The city is partnering with two nonprofits, the STAR House Foundation and Ed Isakson YMCA, to enroll part-time AmeriCorps members as tutors for students at three local Title I elementary schools during the 2019-20 school year, according to a staff report to the council. The grant requires a city match of $42,040.

The program seeks to help children read at grade level and receive additional homework support and STEM and health and wellness programming, staff said. It is expected to benefit 221 students in kindergarten through third grade.

AmeriCorps members will receive workforce readiness training and gain communications and leadership skills by tutoring, staff said. They also will have the opportunity to engage student families, attend professional training, serve the community on National Days of Service, and recruit volunteers for STAR House and the YMCA.
