Firefighters in Rockdale County plan to distribute free smoke detectors Thursday in the neighborhood where four children died last week.

They plan to go door to door starting at 5 p.m. in an outreach program that will include fire safety tips. Firefighters will install the smoke detectors for people who need assistance, county spokeswoman Tonya Parker said in an email.

Reeba Glass was injured and four of her children — 9-year-old Ah’Dariya, 7-year-old Dar’Shawn, 3-year-old Armoni and 8-month-old Deon — died when a fire ripped through their Conyers home Jan. 8.

Officials determined that a 6-year-old sibling started the fire while playing with a lighter in the upstairs hallway.

The only smoke alarm in the duplex was downstairs, and it didn’t have a battery, investigators said.
