Sept 25, 2012Rick Aiken, executive director of the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, is retiring in 2013, after more than two decades of service.
Aiken has served as executive director since 1989. He is credited with helping build the program into a thriving shelter and establishing a low-cost spay and neuter center.
Prior to coming to the humane society, Aiken worked in several zoos in the Southeast and fir the Northeast Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Efforts will start soon to find a replacement.
Shelia has worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for more than 30 years. Previously, she worked at The Lexington Herald-Leader and The Louisville Defender. Her beat is a bit of a mixed bag that includes religion and spirituality, culture and trends, race and aging. She earned degrees from Spelman College and Northwestern University.
