Rhythm and hashbrowns: 10 times Waffle House is mentioned in rap songs

Hip-hop and Waffle House are two staples of Atlanta. Maybe that's why Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Kanye West and others have referenced the diner in songs.

Hip-hop and Waffle House are two staples of Atlanta. Maybe that's why Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Kanye West and others have referenced the diner in songs.

Rappers are big fans of Waffle House, apparently.

Hip-hop and the 24/7 breakfast spot have both been Atlanta staples for quite sometime now. The first Waffle House opened in Avondale Estates in 1955, and it’s easy to argue that Atlanta has had a grip on the hip-hop crown for nearly two decades.

Those factors, combined with Waffle House serving up diner-style food at 1,905 locations across the country, has made it one of the most name-checked restaurants in rap.

It even got a great scene in a hip-hop movie, when T.I. and his pals debated country and city life over waffles and sweet tea in the 2006 flick, "ATL." According to IMDB, the Waffle House where that scene was filmed is at 1700 Howell Mill Road in Atlanta, if you want to check it out.

Here’s 10 times rappers mentioned patty melts, waffles, hash browns and more in songs:

Kanye West — “30 Hours”

Got a hotel room, 3 stars for you / You call down for an omelet / Girl it's 5 in the morning / You realize we at the DoubleTree, not the Aria / Only thing open is Waffle House, girl don't start with me

When the hotel kitchen is closed and room service fails, Kanye notes that you can always count on the Waffle House down the street. Around 3 a.m. on a morning in 2015, Kanye hit up an Atlanta Waffle House with the deans of southern rap, Big Boi and Andre 3000. Earlier that year, he and Kim Kardashian went on a double-date at a Waffle House in Arizona with John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.

2 Chainz — “Big Amount”

6 trey, 6-4 bounce, (expletive), bounce / Hood (expletive), favorite spot was the Waffle House / Patty melt with the hash browns / Tryna avoid all the pat downs

The rapper from College Park makes it clear here that he enjoys a grilled sandwich much more than being frisked and searched.

2 Chainz — “24 Hours”

24/7 like the Waffle House / Three cell phones, still nothin' to talk about

2 Chainz has the third verse in this song by TeeFlii, and kicks it off by mentioning one of his favorite spots in Atlanta. Did we mention Waffle Houses hardly ever close?

2 Chainz — “Extremely Blessed”

I got a move that will break your leg, know what I’m talking about / Known to kill (expletive), (expletive) chalk it out / Our first date was the Waffle House / Different day, different escapades / If they don’t like it they opinions like Escalade's / Everybody got one

For 2 Chainz, Waffle House isn't just a place for a late night snack, it's a place for dates too.

Childish Gambino — “Arrangement”

Eastside Atlanta, flyest (expletive) in a Waffle House / If it ain't money, man, we ain't got (expletive) to talk about

This is from Donald Glover's 2012 mixtape, "Royalty." Billboard reported that while Glover was filming his show for FX, "Atlanta," he would often go through scripts late at night at a Waffle House. There's a scene in the show where Glover's character and others go to Waffle House after hitting the club.

Jay-Z — “Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)”

2 a.m. now I'm gettin’ with her / 3 a.m. now I'm splittin’ with her / 4 a.m. at the Waffle House / 5 a.m. now we at my house

Even rappers from New York like Waffle House. Jay-Z might have been the first to mention it in a song too, as this track off "Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter" came out in 1999.

Shawn Jay — “Georgia”

You'll find me down in Dougherty County in a small city called Albany / Where they used to call us some bammers / And now they jock the grammar / Watch your mouth unless you offer some manner / But ya hustlers on every corner like the Waffle House in Atlanta

This is a 2005 anthem song led by Ludacris that samples Ray Charles. It's about all things Georgia and couldn't be complete without a mention of Waffle House.

Big KRIT — “Get Up 2 Come Down”

It keep me in the zone, I'm like long til' the clock strike twelve / One mo' then I'm out of the front door / On a mission like a Waffle House cook for the 24/7 / Man, I'm just trying to get paid / And make it where these (expletive) hate

Waffle House is still relevant and tasty enough in 2017 to get mentioned in songs. This is from Big KRIT's newest album, "4eva Is a Mighty Long Time." On this track, instead of acknowledging a menu item, KRIT gives a shout-out to the cooks.

Big Boi — “Da Next Day”

Like you just got a scholarship / Or like a Waffle House waitress with a dollar tip / Don't let them see you sweat, (expletive) all the parlor tricks / Better gone, get some gold, (expletive) that dollar, (expletive)

Big Boi reminds us that the folks serving the waffles are working just as hard as the ones cooking them. Next time you're at a Waffle House, be sure to leave a tip.

Lil Wayne — “Cash Out”

My (expletive) smoke like coffee shops / That's syrup gang, Waffle House / Gunfight, I'll knock you out

This is from Weezy's "Dedication 4" mixtape, where he raps over an instrumental from a song by Ca$h Out. Weezy also mentions Waffle House in a song off a 2008 mixtape, called "Me and My Drank."

In addition to the lyrics listed here, Lil Durk and Travis Porter both have songs simply titled, "Waffle House." In the Travis Porter song, rapper Strap wonders what comes on a sausage biscuit, while Lil Durk claims that his trap house is a Waffle House.
