The Hampton City Council recently approved by a 4-3 vote the first reading of an amended alcoholic beverage ordinance and will consider for a second reading and approval at the March 14 meeting. The new ordinance would allow consumption of alcoholic beverages in outdoor public places, now illegal in the city, during special events when specific prior approval is obtained from the city.

At the first reading Mayor Steve Hutchison cast the tie-breaking vote to join Chris Moore, Mary Ann Mitcham and Ann Tarpley in favor. Voting against were Henry Byrd, Charlie Hearn and Marty Meeks.
