A Clayton County Grand Jury meets Wednesday to hear charges against a sheriff's deputy accused of making a recording of another employee in the restroom.
The District Attorney's Office is bringing a proposed indictment charging Sheriff's Deputy and Public Information Officer Alicia Parkes with unlawfully eavesdropping on the job. Parkes is alleged to have made a recording with her cell phone of a co-worker in the bathroom. A half-dozen witnesses are expected to testify.
"We're presenting witnesses before the Grand Jury to see whether they have enough evidence to proceed with an indictment," Clayton District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson said Tuesday.
Deputy Parkes remains in her job and declined to discuss the case when contacted Tuesday.
A recent report by Channel 2 Action News said a rift has emerged between the DA's office and the sheriff over this and other incidents involving Parkes, who had worked at two other law enforcement departments before joining the Clayton sheriff's department.
Lawson denied she has sought an injunction against the Sheriff's office for allegedly blocking the DA's office from collecting evidence, as was also reported. " The sheriff's department has cooperated with my office," she said.
Sheriff Kem Kimbrough said his office investigated the incident, which occurred late last year, and "found no merit to criminal charges."
