The 52-year-old man whose body was found in a northwest Atlanta street early Thursday died of multiple gunshot wounds to the lower extremities, a homicide, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office determined.

The Medical Examiner's findings were released late Thursday afternoon, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Robert C. Dowell's body was found about 4:30 a.m. along West Lake Avenue near Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, according to Atlanta police dispatchers.

An officer on patrol discovered the body under a street light, partially on the sidewalk and partially in the roadway, Homicide Lt. Paul Guerrucci told the AJC.

Guerrucci said the officer initially thought Dowell might have been hit by a vehicle because of the placement of the body, but investigators found shell casings nearby and decided he probably had been shot.

West Lake Avenue was closed for about three hours while police gathered evidence.
