Renfroe Middle School will compete in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 26-30.

Renfroe's appearance in the competition will be the first for any Georgia middle school, according to a press release from City Schools of Decatur.

Four Renfroe students earned spots in the competition by winning the Georgia Middle School Science Bowl in January, which was coordinated by Donna Mullenax, a physics professor at Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The National Science Bowl is a Jeopardy-style competition featuring questions on math as well as earth, space, physical and life sciences. Students get five seconds to answer each question.

The U.S. Department of Energy hosts the national competition and will pay for the Renfroe students' trip to Washington.
