Construction begins this week on a new classroom building at Renfroe Middle School, in front of the gym and facing College Avenue. The 14-classroom structure is part of Renfroe’s phase one of new additions and renovation, which also includes a new bus turnaround and drop-off behind the gym. Work should also begin this week on Phase 1 at Decatur High School, which includes a parking lot along Howard Avenue and a new building, next to the football stadium, that will hold science labs, general classrooms and a new kitchen/cafeteria. Both the Renfroe and Decatur classroom buildings should finish by August, 2016, while the bus turnaround will be ready this August. All Phase 1 construction is financed through COPS funding, which comes to $18.3 million. Future phases hinge on a $75 million general obligation bond getting passed by voters in November.
