The Cherokee County School District released a conceptual architectural rendering of the replacement administration building officials seek to build in downtown Canton.

The three-story structure would house more than 60 administrative employees now downtown, plus allow the return of 90 others dispersed among several campuses, said Superintendent Frank Petruzielo. It would also allow for expanded professional development programs.

Preservation efforts have been made to incorporate aspects of two older buildings on the site, including architectural details of the façade of the first building, a former cotton mill office and artifacts salvaged from the other, a former grammar school.

The Cherokee County Historical Society wants at least one of the buildings to be folded into the new structure, but Petruzielo has said that structural and other issues make that notion unfeasible.

School board members are set to vote on whether to proceed with the project Feb. 5.
