In a unanimous vote last week, Clayton County Deputy Police Chief Mike Register was appointed interim chief of the department by the County Commission. Register, 54, will head the department until a permanent chief is named. Greg Porter was removed as police chief last month to man the E911 department; Porter chose to expedite his retirement instead. Register, a former Green Beret, was hired last year and brings with him 22 years as a member of the Special Forces Group. He also worked at Cobb County Police Department where he retired as a lieutenant in 2005. While there, Register worked in the Special Operations Unit to include time with SWAT, Crime Suppression Unit and the Tactical Team. Register holds a master’s degree and is an instructor at Georgia Law Enforcement Command College.
