District 1 Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Rebecca Chase Williams was sworn in as mayor of Brookhaven following the resignation of Mayor J. Max Davis, who left to run for another office. Judge Michael Jacobs administered the oath of office to Williams. “I look forward to the opportunity to continue to build a great city, where our mission statement says we strive to be a national model, a place where our residents and businesses flourish,” Williams said. “I will continue to build on the work already accomplished, to learn from experience and to build a government that is exceptional in all regards.” Williams was appointed by fellow councilmembers since the election for that office is less than 12 months away in November. Vacancies of 12 months or more require a special election. Williams appointed District 1 resident Linley Jones to represent that district. The election for that seat also will be this November. The council elected District 3 Councilman Bates Mattison as Mayor Pro Tem. In addition to the mayor and District 1 seat, the District 3 seat also will be up for election on Nov. 3.
