Gwinnett County officials are warning residents to take precautions at Rhodes Jordan Park due to thousands of gallons of sewage leaked into the park’s lake from a nearby stream. Water monitors detected the leak Wednesday at the park at 100 East Crogan Street in Lawrenceville.
The sewage leak has been diverted, but park visitors are encouraged to release any fish caught until there is no longer a threat. Signs are in place through this week warning visitors of the problem. The county will be required under environmental regulations to monitor the lake’s water quality for the next year.
The leak was the result of a burst 8-inch cast iron pipe. A bypass pump was placed on the pipe to divert sewage around the break while crews replace the damaged pipe.
