Dry weather is forecast for most of Thursday, but there’s a slight chance of rain late in the day, followed by an increasing risk of rain and thunderstorms on Friday.

The National Weather Service said the best chance for thunderstorms to sweep into the state from the northwest will be early Friday ahead of a sharp cold front that will drop temperatures dramatically.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said showers will roll into metro Atlanta early Friday morning, with “embedded showers and thunderstorms as we head toward noon.”

The chance of rain is 30 percent late Thursday, increasing to 80 percent Friday, Minton said.

Storms that developed over the mountain counties Wednesday afternoon dumped heavy rain in the Blairsville area. The Weather Service estimated from radar images that as much as 5 inches of rain fell in some areas, while a reporting station in Blairsville recorded 2.86 inches of rain.

The Union County Emergency Management Agency reported flooding along the Coosa, Young Cane and Jones creeks, with water coming over a bridge on Byers Road just south of Ga. 515 west of Blairsville.

Minton said afternoon temperatures Thursday will be 81, a couple of degrees below Wednesday’s high of 83. But highs Friday are expected to be about a dozen degrees cooler, only reaching the upper 60s.

The weekend forecast is for sunny skies and cooler temperatuers, with highs in the mid-60s Saturday and upper 60s Sunday, and morning lows in the low to mid-40s, some 20 degrees below Friday morning’s expected low of 64.
