Qualifying is proceeding at a brisk pace for Cherokee County offices to be voted on in the May 24 primary election.

By day’s end Tuesday, four Republicans had qualified in the race to replace longtime sheriff Roger Garrison, who’s retiring: Frank Reynolds and Jeff Donley of Canton, Chip McCarthy of Woodstock and David Waters of Ball Ground.

By contrast, the three Cherokee County Board of Education positions had drawn only incumbents, with Kyla Cromer of Canton filing for another term as board chair, along with Kelly Poole of Canton in District 1 and Patsy Jordan of Ball Ground in District 2. All are Republicans.

The race for Cherokee County Commissioner in District 3 drew Republicans Benny Carter of White and Bob Kovacs of Canton, while Republican Jim Hubbard of Woodstock qualified in District 2. Neither of the incumbents had qualified by the end of the day Tuesday.

GOP incumbents Patricia Baker of Canton and Earl Darby filed for superior court clerk and coroner respectively.
