Northside Republican lawmakers are again introducing multiple identical resolutions that would allow north Fulton County to split off into a new Milton County. Though not expected to pass this year because House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones, R-Milton, doesn’t have the necessary votes, the proposals serve as both a show of solidarity and a shot across the bow in ongoing efforts to overhaul Fulton’s government.

Through redistricting, north Fulton’s Republican legislators now control the House and Senate panels that can introduce local legislation — bills altering the county structure that the General Assembly as a whole generally approves. But re-creating Milton County would require wider support, including a two-thirds majority of votes in both chambers and a statewide referendum on whether to allow previously merged counties to re-form.
