A corrections officer at Gwinnett County's Phillips State Prison was arrested this week after allegedly taking bribes from prisoners and smuggling in tobacco for them.
Carolyn Siobhan Jenkins, an Athens resident, was booked into the Gwinnett County jail Wednesday on charges including bribery, violation of oath of office and giving items to inmates without warden's consent. She remained there Thursday morning in lieu of $33,600 bond.
According to arrest warrants, Jenkins took money from two inmates at the prison on Buford's West Rock Quarry Road, then brought them "a quantity of contraband items (tobacco) on multiple occasions."
"Carolyn Jenkins admitted the delivery of contraband five times into Phillips State Prison," warrants said. Those incidents reportedly happened in September, October and November.
A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections said Thursday afternoon that the agency "can't comment on active investigations."
Jenkins is the fourth Gwinnett-based law enforcement officer to be arrested in the last two months.
- On Nov. 15, now-former Lilburn police officer Gary Livingston was indicted on charges alleging he inappropriately touched and videotaped a woman during an on-duty incident.
- On Nov. 2, Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy Michael Lomax resigned after being arrested for allegedly having a sexual encounter with a 13-year-old boy he met online.
- On Oct. 3, ex-Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy Terry Henderson turned himself in amid accusations that he "digitally penetrated" a female inmate while transporting her from south Georgia.
Henderson and Lomax marked the fifth and sixth Gwinnett sheriff's deputies to be arrested since 2012.
