Keep those dreams alive.
No one had the winning ticket in Wednesday's Powerball lottery, so the jackpot jumped to a record $700 million at Saturday's drawing.
That’s not only the largest jackpot ever for Powerball, but also the largest for any lottery in U.S. history, Georgia Lottery spokeswoman Kimberly Starks said.
The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 2, 11, 47, 62 and 63, and the Powerball number was 17.
One person in Georgia did win $1 million in Wednesday's lottery, according to the Georgia lottery's website. That winning ticket was sold in Savannah at a Sandfly convenience store at 7362 Skidaway Road.
Many retailers were swamped with would-be winners seeking their lucky numbers Wednesday — a scene that is likely to repeat in the days leading up to Saturday’s drawing.
That has meant ever-rising collections by Georgia’s state-run lottery in recent weeks. The lottery has collected $30.7 million since the jackpot started growing on Nov. 7, but $11.1 million of that was from ticket sales just for Wednesday’s drawing, Starks said.
A portion of such lottery revenue supports HOPE scholarships for Georgia college students and pre-kindergarten programs.
The cash lump sum a single winner could expect from a $700 million jackpot would be about $428 million, or almost $296 million after the lottery withheld federal and state income taxes from the prize.
But whoever wins will have to be incredibly lucky. The odds of winning the big prize are one in 292 million.
