Students at Ball Ground Elementary were turned away from school Tuesday because the school had no power.

Georgia Power had assured officials that the school at 480 Old Canton Road that power would be restored in time for school, according to Barbara Jacoby, a spokesman for Cherokee County schools.

At 5 a.m.  Georgia Power reassured officials that power would be restored, Jacoby said. At 6 a.m. the school was still without power and the buses were starting to pick up the children.  The school the began notifying individual parents that school was canceled.

About 70 children who showed up at the school on buses were waiting for parents to pick them up. all the sudents had been picked up by parents or guardians as of early morning, according to Jacoby.  She said no other Cherokee schools were affected by the power outages and none were damaged in the storms.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency reported that roughly 100 homes were damaged in Cherokee County. Tornado sirens and swirling winds sent countless people scrambling for cover.
