After serving the city as a councilman for 13 years, Al Thurman was sworn in as Powder Springs’ and Cobb County’s first African-American mayor on Monday.

The meeting began at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers, Community Development building, 4488 Pineview Drive.

With no opposition, Doris Dawkins already was sworn in during November to take the place of Thurman who had to resign since his council term would not have ended until the end of 2017.

Patricia A. Wisdom and Patrick Bordelone Sr. also were elected to serve as new council members.

Returning to the council will be Nancy Hudson and Cheryl Sarvis.
