Veteran City of Decatur firefighter Ryan Taylor died unexpectedly of a heart attack Sunday, the department’s first active firefighter death, at least in recent memory, according to city officials.

Taylor, 40, was popular and well known, due mostly to his frequent fire safety inspections in businesses and homes. He served as a driver, conducted numerous public safety education seminars and did the landscaping at both Decatur fire stations.

Taylor began his firefighting career with Decatur in 2001, and is survived by a wife and four children. His funeral was Thursday in Madison where he lived.

The city’s fire/rescue department requests that if residents want to honor Taylor, please donate canned goods or winter coats for those in need.
