The bomb threat that caused authorities to evacuate a Gwinnett County school bus Friday started with several students texting their parents that a bomb was on board, Gwinnett County police said.

Parents called Dacula Middle School, which alerted the bus driver. He stopped at Fence Road and Clarke Trail, and the bus was emptied.

While the children were taken to school on another bus, the police Hazardous Device Unit "utilized various resources to search the bus and determined nothing was on the bus that resembled any type of dangerous device," said Cpl. Edwin Ritter, a police spokesman.

Authorities "will thoroughly investigate this incident to determine how this threat came about and levy charges if necessary," Ritter added.

Asked whether it could have been a prank, Ritter said only that the incident remains under investigation.
