The man who told police he had been stabbed in downtown Woodstock later admitted he'd stabbed himself, police said.
Now, the 38-year-old is being charged with false report of a crime, Woodstock police said Tuesday.
Richard Beck, of Jonesboro, approached customers at a restaurant Friday night and told them he had been stabbed by two men as he walked on Oak Street, according to Brittany Duncan, police spokeswoman.
Beck initially said two men jumped out of a black SUV and stabbed him several times with a knife before one of the suspects stole his silver Datsun pickup truck, police said. Beck was treated at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for wounds to his upper left arm, right forearm and right inner thigh, police said.
But on Monday, Beck told police a different story, Duncan said. Beck told police he stabbed himself, she said.
"The evidence supports this confession," Duncan said.
Police aren't sure yet what prompted Beck to fabricate the story, Duncan said.
Beck was arrested Monday and transported to the Cherokee County jail, police said. Beck remained in jail Tuesday afternoon on $1,530 bond.
