A 32-year-old Duluth man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly shot a woman who was the object of his affection.

The victim, Maria Jiminez-Alcara, 33, was listed in critical but stable condition at a local hospital on Wednesday, according to Gwinnett County Police.

Authorities said that Miguel Aguilar-Guerrero was infatuated with Jiminez-Alcara, a "happily married" woman, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith. Aguilar-Guerrero nevertheless wanted her to leave her husband so they could be together. He was a roommate of one of Jiminez-Alcara's relatives.

Jiminez-Alcara was visiting the relative at 10:41 p.m. Tuesday at Madison at Breckenridge Apartments when Aguilar-Guerrero allegedly opened fire on her, shooting her three times.

He is being held at the Gwinnett County jail on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Aguilar-Guerrero, a native of Mexico, also has an immigration hold from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
