Police have determined the off-duty Lithonia police officer who was killed in a car wreck last week was at fault for the crash.
Jamell Dent was driving his BMW motorcycle on the evening of July 4 on Rock Chapel Road in the Stephenson area when he collided with a Honda Accord. Detectives determined Dent’s speed was the primary cause of the wreck, which also killed an infant and injured the two adults riding in the car, according to the DeKalb County Police Department.
Authorities believe the Accord had been attempting to make a U-turn at Stephenson Road when Dent crashed into it. The motorcycle flipped the car and pinned Dent underneath, killing him.
The infant’s 22-year-old mother, who was driving the car at the time of the wreck, told police she didn’t see Dent coming. Dent was unmarried and had no children.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
