Police have identified the man who died in the wreck that occurred around daybreak Saturday on I-285 in Sandy Springs.
Gerald D. Wallace, 36, of Norcross was killed when his car hit a tractor-trailer around 7 a.m. on I-285 westbound between Glenridge and Roswell roads, according to Sandy Springs police spokesman Steve Rose.
The tractor-trailer had slowed because of a car bumper obstructing the roadway.
“The bumper apparently dislodged from another vehicle, driven by 45-year old Ruben Vega, who struck the retaining wall just prior to this accident,” Rose said.
Witnesses told police Wallace was driving at a high rate of speed before the impact, Rose said.
Vega has been charged with a lane violation and second degree vehicular homicide. The driver of the tractor trailer was not charged, Rose said.
Four westbound lanes were closed for most of the morning, but all lanes were reopened by 11 a.m.
