Atlanta police investigating a Tuesday night shooting that left a woman dead said Wednesday that the incident did not involve a hitchhiker as those involved initially told officers.

The woman, whom police have not identified, was found with a gunshot wound in a pickup truck at a Chevron station on Northside Drive around 11 p.m. Monday.

“Initial reports indicated that the victim and her companions stopped to pick up a hitchhiker around the area of North Avenue and James P. Brawley Drive,” Atlanta police Sgt. Greg Lyon said Wednesday.

“Further investigation has revealed inconsistencies in some of the information obtained during the preliminary on-scene investigation,” Lyon said in an e-mail.

“At this point in the investigation, we have concluded that no hitchhiker was picked up or involved, nor was the shooting a random act of violence,” he said.

The woman later died at Grady Memorial Hospital from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting.
