A DeKalb County man is accused of beating his 78-year-old mother and tying her to her bed.
Darryl Bernard Haynes pleaded not guilty Thursday morning in DeKalb County Superior Court to charges of abuse of an elderly person, false imprisonment and obstruction of an officer.
On April 26, police say Pecola Haynes, Darryl Haynes’ mother, told her caregiver that she was hurting. The caregiver, Andrea Beasely, examined her and found bruises on the woman’s wrist and back, according to police reports.
Beasely asked Darryl Haynes about his mother’s injuries, and Haynes, 50, told her “I beat her [butt], because she needed to be quiet,” police said.
He also told Beasley that his mother had been pulling down the curtains, and he began smoking marijuana as he spoke with the caregiver, prosecutors said.
Beasely left the home on South Indian Creek Drive near Stone Mountain, where both Haynes live, and called police.
Officers arrived to find Pecola Haynes bound at the wrists to her bed, police said.
Asked about the bruises on his mother, Darryl Haynes said he didn’t know how she got them but that she was likely crawling around the home on her back, according to police reports.
Medics called to the home also found bruises on her legs and inner thighs, police said.
When police tried to detain Darryl Haynes, he initially cooperated, but told them he was claustrophobic.
When he asked officers to open squad car windows while he waited for them to conclude their investigation, police say he tried to get out.
“That’s much better,” police said Haynes told them when he opened the rear door of the police car.
Officers said when they ordered him back into the car, he ignored their commands.
Officers then struggled to force Haynes back into the vehicle, eventually using a Taser twice to subdue him before he complied, according to police reports.
He remains in the DeKalb County jail on a $12,000 bond.
Pecola Haynes is being cared for by a grandchild and by the professional caregiver, prosecutors said.
