Plans for Liberty Plaza at the State Capitol

Crews start demolishing a 60-year-old parking deck across from the statehouse the week of April 28, 2014, beginning what could be a years long project to give Capitol Hill it's first major facelift since the Jimmy Carter was president. The parking area will be transformed into Liberty Plaza, a protest-rally-park area.

Other Capitol plaza plans from years past--1910: The 1910 plan for Capitol Hill included a mall of buildings, greenspace and fountains leading up to the Capitol. Provided by the Georgia Building Authority

Other Capitol plaza plans from years past--1927: The 1927 plan for Capitol Hill area had seven buildings clustered around the Capitol surrounding a square with an obelisk in the center. Provided by the Georgia Building Authority

Other Capitol plaza plans from years past--1932: The 1932 plan for Capitol Hill area has a similar design with buildings clustered around the Capitol, including an auditorium where the Legislative Office Building is today, and a square in the middle. Provided by the Georgia Building Authority

Other Capitol plaza plans from years past--1944: The 1944 plan for the Capitol Hill area, like some of the others, included a public area/square across from the Capitol and City Hall. Provided by the Georgia Building Authority
