Three crashes on I-20 resulted in a six-car pileup Sunday evening and claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a passenger.

The pedestrian was hit near mile marker 82 in Rockdale County, setting off a chain reaction that collected six vehicles, investigators with the Georgia State Patrol said Monday in a statement. Both the pedestrian, identified as 70-year-old David Ray Westberg of Conyers, and a passenger in one of the vehicles were dead at the scene when troopers arrived about 7:10 p.m.

Westberg was struck by a passing Nissan Maxima as he attempted to cross the westbound lanes, according to the GSP. It is not clear why the man was on the interstate.

Two secondary crashes then shut down most of the westbound lanes. In one of the crashes, a Toyota SUV stopped on the interstate and was rear-ended by a Nissan truck, troopers said. The Toyota’s back-seat passenger, identified by the GSP as 25-year-old Miriam Porras of Dallas, Texas, was killed.

Details on the remaining three vehicles involved were not provided.

The deadly incident remains under investigation, according to the state agency.
