Drivers on Peachtree Parkway/Ga. 141 in Peachtree Corners can’t miss construction now underway on the city’s soon to be iconic pedestrian bridge. The bridge, near the city’s Town Green outdoor amphitheater, is part of the Peachtree Corners’ master trail plan and will connect two retail developments, including restaurants and a dine-in movie complex. The trails will connect to existing trails to the north in Duluth down to trails on the south side of Peachtree Corners.

The $4.6 million bridge is being constructed by Astra Group, based in Woodstock, GA, with a scheduled completion date of summer, 2020. Funding comes from SPLOST.

The bridge will span 194 feet and consist of abutments with four illuminated towers that will house elevators. Each end will include an elevated plaza that will support a thrust-arch style bridge that pays homage to the original Jones Bridge that stood for many years over the Chattahoochee River.

Construction began in the fall with piles driven deep into the subsurface to reach bedrock. The structural foundation was built on top. The two bridge abutments are under construction now. Work on the structural elements will continue in preparation for the placement of the arch structure that is being fabricated at an off-site facility. Traffic will be detoured on a weekend when the bridge is ready to be placed over the highway. That work will be scheduled well in advance with the public being notified in numerous ways
