An ordinance amendment to hold parents more accountable for what their teens do while driving golf carts will be on the table at the July 16 City Council meeting.

City Manager Jon Rorie and Assistant Chief of Police Matt Myers laid out details of the new language to the council at its June 18 meeting. Prompted by frequent complaints about teen drivers endangering pedestrians, the amendment to Section 70 of the city code would hold parents liable if they “permit, whether knowingly or through ineffective control or supervision” children under 17 to violate city or state safety laws while driving a golf cart on the local paths.

The amendment would also allow code enforcement officers (in addition to police officers) to issue citations to violators that would then go to municipal court.

The council will vote on the amendment in July, but earlie this month unanimously approved $9,500 for the purchase of a golf cart for use by code enforcement staff on the paths.
