Sandy Springs City Council members have elected their colleague John Paulson mayor pro tempore, the officer who presides over council meetings in Mayor Rusty Paul’s absence.

Paulson has represented Council District 1 since 2009 and was re-elected last fall. He was nominated for the mayor pro tem job by fellow Council Member Tibby DeJulio, who served 12 years in that position and continues to represent District 5 on the council.

Paulson is a registered professional engineer who has lived in Sandy Springs for more than 25 years, according to his council biography. He is president of Dison Contracting and Supply, a consulting firm specializing in geosynthetics and reinforced soil structure design and construction.

He is a Vietnam veteran, having served as an infantryman, and has been a member of American Legion Post 190, past president of the Northridge Community Association and board member of the Dunwoody Homeowners Association. A Chicago native, Paulson and his wife Mary have two children, Stephanie and Jeffrey.
